NAME DROPPING

Proverbs 11:2

Have you ever said that you and the boss were good friends when you were actually not? Or, has anyone told you that he knew a celebrity but you knew it was not likely? This behavior in our culture is called name-dropping. Name-droppers use everyone and anyone’s name, as long as it is convenient to their cause. The drop names to make you feel less important and for them to be seen as more important.

Name-dropping is only one of many expressions of pride. People are smarter than we think, and can easily see through us. Attempts to make ourselves look better often lead to humiliation, regret, and a stained reputation. Pride is often just a mask for immaturity and insecurity.

Today’s passage says that wise people are not proud people. On the contrary, wise people are humble people. We are humble because all that we are and all that we have comes from Him, and His is the only name we should drop.

Meditation:
Name-dropping is done by many to enhance their sense of personal worth. What means do you, yourself, employ? Our security should rest in God and not in ourselves, or others’ estimate of ourselves.

Prayer:
Lord, remind me to always find my security, confidence, and identity in You. Keep me dependent on You, and convict me during all instances of pride.
